Building Connections: Educators Panel

Building Connections: Educators Panel

Back in late November, MCCEI hosted it’s first ever Panel Event. This was a panel comprised of local educators, both from the High School and the Collegiate level, who spoke to an audience of over 50 about the challenges facing the education system. The room was split between industry members and educators and concluded with a networking session, so the two sides could communicate each other’s goals.

The panel included: Douglas Handy from Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) as the Moderator and panelists Dr. Lewis Waller (Morgan State University), Chris Hadfield (ABC Baltimore), Shandria Proctor (BCPS), and William Plantholt (BCPS).

Some of the topics breached, included: Recruitment methods for teachers, education misconceptions about the built environment industry, apprenticeships, and how to communicate to the students what businesses look for in a professional. The response from the audience following the event was nothing short of overwhelmingly positive. One guest commented, “Building Connections contained much needed information and a networking opportunity to begin/extend the conversation between the educators and industry professionals. Collaboration is the key for continuous success.” Another mentioned, “It was a great event. I enjoyed the collaboration and interaction.” One of our panelist, Bill Plantholt said, “I think the concept is a good one to provide some starters for conversation between the industry and education sectors to help a great need in both areas.”
